The Studio

Is located in my home; it is an informal and private atmosphere. My focus is on YOU when you are here. The studio is in the back of the house and is entered from the alley that runs between Highway 2 East and 10th Street West directly behind the parking lot of Jackson Hewitt.

Why the Name Dancing Bones?

Several years ago I made a sculpture for a Day of the Dead celebration that had Dancing Skeletons on it with the phrase, “These bones were made for dancing.” The idea behind the sculpture has a deep personal meaning for me. I love to dance! Through dancing I release my inner soul, dancing is me! I had the design tattooed on my ankle so with every step I celebrate the dance of life.  That’s why I made it my business logo and my business name.

part of a Dia de los Muertos sculpture by Barbara that reflects her love of dancing

What is the fascination with Day of the Dead ?

“Dia de los Muertos”

Moving to Tucson, Arizona in the early 1980’s, I discovered the tradition of celebrating one’s ancestors on Dia de los Muertos-- the Day of the Dead. Tucson is a city rich with a strong Mexican culture that celebrates Family and Ancestors with the annual festival that pays respect to those who have lived before us. I love the tradition and the thought behind it-- respect for one’s roots. The celebration is full of color; cemeteries are decorated with bright flowers and artworks. Festive picnic meals are prepared and enjoyed by family and friends to celebrate the lives, accomplishments and memories of loved ones passed. For me, to Dance is to Remember!

A Message from Barbara…

I just wanted to apologize for not keeping up my website and thank you all for your patience with me right now. As you may or may not be aware, February brought critical illnesses and surgery to three members of my family (my sister, my mother-in-law, and my sister-in-law). Throughout the spring and summer they have each been in their own stages of either recovery or actively fighting their diseases and I have been trying to send positive energy and light to them. During this time, I have allowed myself to step back from the website and just concentrate on the ‘one day at a time’ aspect of recovery. Kate ended up moving to Seattle to support my sister for awhile, then decided to stay there and get established before starting school in Seattle in the fall—so no Kate this summer! Right now she is trying to find her own way in life and we will see if she returns in the future… So thanks for your patience! I will try to get back in the full swing of things soon--

This is the studio entrance. The Dogs won’t be there because they move around and they are mostly friendly, but they will be somewhere else when you come for your appointment! They are my ‘early warning system’ for when someone is here and I’ve stepped out of the studio for a few minutes. I hear them barking and come running!
